CLINIC: Sea Kayaking in Currents and Eddies. Skill: Intermediate+

Details

Minimum 4 students. 3-hour Class

INSTRUCTOR: Chris Celentano

The Sea Kayaking in Currents and Eddies clinic is aimed for folks who are intermediate to advanced in skill and are looking forward to challenging themselves in the ocean and/or moving water in the future. Long kayaks behave much much differently in current than their short, whitewater counterparts. While many of the skills transfer back and forth, there are some key points that need to be learned and practiced.

Learning to maneuver a sea kayak in current and moving water will open up an entirely new world of paddling to clinic participants. It will also open up a slew of new places to paddle.

We will learn how moving water interacts with fixed features in the water as well as with our boats and paddles. We will learn about various river and moving water features and how to best navigate them with our long boats.

Expect to get wet. We will be challenging ourselves and pushing ourselves beyond our normal comfort zone of traditionally flat water. We will be learning to maneuver in and out of eddies, how to ferry, and how to surf (if the opportunity presents itself). All of these maneuvers will of course be accompanied by lessons associated with the foundational skills needed to perform them in the first place; ie edging, bracing, low brace turns, bow rudder stroke, etc.

Please bring your kayak, paddle, sprayskirt, helmet, and any thermal insulation you think you might want for spending time in the water in late July on the Spokane River

This clinic is for touring and sea kayaks.
