Details
Intermediate & advanced flat water paddlers only!
Pend Oreille River - Metaline to Boundary Dam
August 3, 10 am - 5 pmRegistration is required here on Meetup.
This trip is 12 miles one way. 6+ hours of paddling time on the water. If you are not confident that you can paddle for 6 hours, then this is not a good trip for you. This is a one-way trip. There is no place to bail out if you get tired. The only road access is at the put-in and 12 miles later at the take-out place. We stay together the entire time so our whole group can only go as fast as the slowest person. It is recommended that your kayak be at least 10' long. Inflatable kayaks or SUPs are not recommended unless you are accustomed to keeping up with longer hard-sided kayaks.
Bring food and lots of drinks. Wear a PFD, whistle and sunscreen.
Put-in at the Metaline Park boat launch, Metaline, WA

Take out at Boundry Dam Campground.

If you have trouble finding parking at Boundary Dam, there is a ranger in the park who is expecting our group. He will show us where overflow parking is.
Meet at the Metaline Park boat launch at 10 am. Unload your gear then we'll work together to shuttle most of our vehicles to the take-out 12 miles down the road.
This is about a 1.5 hour drive from Yokes in Mead and about 2 hours from Spokane and CDA to Metaline.
There are many waterfalls including a big one - PeeWee Falls. If the water level is low enough, there are caves we can kayak into. The water level can fluctuate 2-8', depending on what is happening at Box Canyon Dam Boundary Dam. There are miles of beautiful rock formations and canyons!
Most of the time the water flow is very slow so you have to paddle the entire time to make downriver progress. Depending on how many stops we make, it will take about 6+ hours on the water. There are several places to stop along the river to stretch your legs and eat. The water is cool but comfortable and fun to swim in!
The cell phone reception in the area is not great so plan accordingly.
